WHY PALEO WORKS!

Dr. Venning, South African Chiropractor and Owner of  Vitality Chiropractic. He wrote an interesting piece on Why Paleo Works.

“If we’re going to ask the question and try to find out why paleo works then, let’s be sure that we know what we’re talking about.

What’s the premise?

When I speak or write about Paleo I’m talking about a frame of thought, a way of thinking about my lifestyle that encompasses how I eat, move and think. It includes the ‘Paleo Diet’ but this is not a rigid set of rules of how much carbohydrate, fat and protein I can eat. It’s a way of thinking about what I eat.

The idea starts here: any animal in it’s natural habitat, is healthier than the same animal in captivity. Think of Free Willy and it’ll illustrate my point.

Next, healthcare is a branch of biology and this is a point we seem to have forgotten. We have separated ourselves from nature to a ridiculous point.

If a plant starts wilting we ask when it was last watered.

If a dog gets sick we ask what it ate and if fish get sick we clean up their rivers and dams.

If a person gets sick we give them drugs, radiation or surgery.

If you take an animal outside of the environment it was naturally adapted to you would be able to watch how it’s health declines. No amount of drugs or surgery would reinstate a state of health, they would be able to cover the symptoms that the change created, but there is more to being well than not being ill.

The Human Zoo

As humans we have taken ourselves out of nature and domesticated ourselves and this is the single biggest cause of ill-health world wide. I live in South Africa where HIV/Aids is recognised as a massive health problem but the tide of chronic, degenerative disease that is swelling across the globe is going to dwarf the issues we are going to face in the coming years.

Paleo works because it asks what we are best adapted to and then sets out to find ways to re-create those factors. That does’t mean that we re-enact history by wearing loincloths and foregoing the useful advances science has given us. Rather it is a frame of thought that asks, “What do I genetically require for well-being?” and it uses any advances it can to answer that question.

The Vitality Concept follows these lines and asks, “What’s my potential?” and then coaches you toward finding the solutions in a way that works for you. There are no ‘one size fits all’ solutions, though there are broad concepts that apply to all of us, but you have to do it for yourself.

Paleo = Eat + Move + Think = Vitality

Why Paleo Works?

The quality of your answers depends on the quality of your questions. Paleo works because it asks a different question, “What do I genetically require for wellbeing?”

Roasted Pumpkin Seed Recipe!

Fall means pumpkin season and pumpkin carving with the kids or grandkids is always a good time. However, no matter how much carving or filling we are doing, we should not waste food! Hang on to the pumpkin seeds, as they are a source in the Paleo diet and to be a satisfying, crunchy treat! Pumpkin seeds are also a good source of protein, magnesium, zinc, and omega-3s.

Roasted Pumpkin Seeds

This is vegan, gluten-free and fits perfect for the holiday season!

Ingredients

1 cup pumpkin seeds

2 tsp olive oil

1 tsp cumin

½  tsp garlic salt

1 tsp onion powder

1 tsp paprika

Dash of cayenne pepper and cinnamon 

Directions

  1. .  Clean out that pumpkin!
  2. .  Wash the pulp from the seeds (soaking the seeds in warm water for an hour will help this process).
  3. .   Allow the seeds to dry for 24 hours.
  4. .   Preheat the oven to 350° F.
  5. .   Combine all ingredients and place in 8×8 pan, coating the seeds with the seasoning mixture.
  6. .   Bake for 45 minutes, stirring every 15-20 minutes.

This can be a great snack during your Paleo Challenge!

Right on the Money Article: Modern Wheat a “perfect, chronic poison,” Doctor says:

(CBS News) Modern wheat is a “perfect, chronic poison,” according to Dr. William Davis, a cardiologist who has published a book all about the world’s most popular grain.

Davis said that the wheat we eat these days isn’t the wheat your grandma had: “It’s an 18-inch tall plant created by genetic research in the ’60s and ’70s,” he said on “CBS This Morning.” “This thing has many new features nobody told you about, such as there’s a new protein in this thing called gliadin. It’s not gluten. I’m not addressing people with gluten sensitivities and celiac disease. I’m talking about everybody else because everybody else is susceptible to the gliadin protein that is an opiate. This thing binds into the opiate receptors in your brain and in most people stimulates appetite, such that we consume 440 more calories per day, 365 days per year.”

Asked if the farming industry could change back to the grain it formerly produced, Davis said it could, but it would not be economically feasible because it yields less per acre. However, Davis said a movement has begun with people turning away from wheat – and dropping substantial weight.

“If three people lost eight pounds, big deal,” he said. “But we’re seeing hundreds of thousands of people losing 30, 80, 150 pounds. Diabetics become no longer diabetic; people with arthritis having dramatic relief. People losing leg swelling, acid reflux, irritable bowel syndrome, depression, and on and on every day.”

To avoid these wheat-oriented products, Davis suggests eating “real food,” such as avocados, olives, olive oil, meats, and vegetables. “(It’s) the stuff that is least likely to have been changed by agribusiness,” he said. “Certainly not grains. When I say grains, of course, over 90 percent of all grains we eat will be wheat, it’s not barley… or flax. It’s going to be wheat.

“It’s really a wheat issue.”

Some health resources, such as the Mayo Clinic, advocate a more balanced diet that does include wheat. But Davis said on “CTM” they’re just offering a poor alternative.

“All that literature says is to replace something bad, white enriched products with something less bad, whole grains, and there’s an apparent health benefit – ‘Let’s eat a whole bunch of less bad things.’ So I take…unfiltered cigarettes and replace with Salem filtered cigarettes, you should smoke the Salems. That’s the logic of nutrition, it’s a deeply flawed logic. What if I take it to the next level, and we say, ‘Let’s eliminate all grains,’ what happens then?

“That’s when you see, not improvements in health, that’s when you see transformations in health.”

Stacy Cunningham Lost 55 Pounds Going Paleo

RENO, Nev. (CBS 5) – Many people view surgeons as all-too anxious to cut – and reap the large fees that go with performing surgeries, but Reno plastic surgeon Charles Virden takes a different approach, especially in regard to obesity.

For Virden, liposuction is often the least desirable alternative. He’d prefer patients adopt a Paleo lifestyle, changing diet and health routine to lose weight.

“I think of obesity as a bigger problem than just having to have fat sucked out of you,” explained Virden.

The Paleo Diet worked for Stacy Cunningham, a hotel manager in Reno who struggled with her weight for years.

“I hadn’t been under 200 pounds since giving birth to my daughter 14 years ago,” said Cunningham.

Once she “went Paleo,” Cunningham lost 55 pounds over a period of six months. She also realized that “Paleo wasn’t just a diet, it was a lifestyle change.”

She worked with lifestyle coach Sandra Bledsoe of Renovation Medical Spa, who said people can take control of their own fight against obesity.
